I am amazed by seeing exceptional individuals who are nothing short of brilliant struggling to apply the same levels of workplace practices, tenacity and creativity to their respective job searches.

Had a great experience with a customer (yes candidates are my customers) who is an brilliant sales professional in their chosen sector. Yet, when we first met, it was evident that they had been struggling with the search for a new role.
I put my notepad aside and asked “what makes you such a great salesperson”. Their answer:
  1. I spend the time researching my market
  2. I am always prepared
  3. I focus on quality of service and providing good service outcomes
  4. I have a structured plan for every conversation
  5. I make sure that both parties can walk away with a win-win outcome
  6. I followup and always stay in touch with clients (new & existing)

My response when they finished was “that’s brilliant. have you used the same process/effort into your job search”. The customers response “Honestly. I don’t think I have.”

We do all the right things everyday in our roles, that make us very good at our jobs. This same logic should be applied to our job search. And i can confidently say that if and when we apply the same level of detail and attention to our job search we will be equally as successful.
